On March 19, 2026, the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre welcomed community members for this year’s Two-Spirit & Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Awareness & Celebration Day, an evening dedicated to honouring identity, culture, and connection. Supported by Tikinagan Child & Family Services and the Sioux Lookout First Nations Health Authority, the event brought together partners, families, and community members in a warm and inclusive environment.
The evening began with a shared meal prepared by Anton at the Nishnawbe-Gamik Friendship Centre. Her cooking helped set a welcoming tone, creating space for people to gather, reconnect, and enjoy time together before the program began. Throughout the event, Interim 2-Spirit Programs Manager Jordyn Angeconeb guided the evening with thoughtful hosting and a focus on cultural safety, emphasizing the importance of uplifting 2SLGBTQQIA+ identities within our Nations.
Community engagement played a central role in the celebration. OBA Creations offered a vending booth featuring locally made items, while both SLFNHA and Tikinagan provided resource tables with information on programs and supports available to youth, families, and community members. Ever Sick! Consulting contributed a range of 2-Spirit educational materials, complemented by resources from LGBT YouthLine, ensuring that attendees had access to identity-affirming information and supports.
To close the evening, participants enjoyed several rounds of bingo, complete with a selection of prizes that added a lighthearted and engaging end to the gathering. The activity encouraged connection and laughter, reinforcing the event’s focus on community building.
This year’s Two-Spirit & Indigenous LGBTQQIA+ Awareness & Celebration Day highlighted the strength and resilience of 2SLGBTQQIA+ people across our Nations and demonstrated the impact of collaboration among community partners. The event served as a meaningful reminder of the importance of creating spaces where all individuals feel valued, supported, and celebrated. Chi-miigwetch to everyone who contributed to the success of this gathering and to those who continue to champion inclusive, culturally grounded programming in our communities.
